Difference between Painting and Sculpture

The major difference between Painting and Sculpture is that Painting is a process of application of paint or colours to a surface of different mediums and whereas Sculpture is three-dimensional visual arts that give life to a stone or soil!

Painting

Painting is an expression of ideas and emotions along with various aesthetic qualities, in a beautiful two-dimensional visual form or rather I would say it is a visual language.

This wonderful language holds various elements like shapes, lines, colours, tones, and textures. They are used in different ways to yield vibrations of volume, space, movement, and light on any kind of flat surface which is not three-dimensional.

Usually, these elements join hands together into various expressive forms or patterns in order to signify factual or paranormal concepts. They help in interpreting the theme.

It is always in the hands of an artist’s decision to choose a particular medium like tempera, fresco, oil, acrylic, watercolour or any other paints medium that can be used. It is basically how comfortable the artist is with the medium.

There are different types of painting like the mural, easel, panel, miniature, Tanjore painting, glass painting, silk painting, modern art, abstract painting and many more.

In early days, various kings and religions controlled the subject of paintings and they were the ones who determined its function whether it has to be ritualistic, devotional, decorative or educational. Artists were employed as skilled artisans and were never given the freedom of creativity.

Sculpture

Sculpture making is also one of the artistic forms in which three-dimensional objects are made using hard materials. The materials used vary from soil to plastics. There are sculptures can be made out of any materials like glass, wood, plaster or even rubber or it could be out of soap.

These materials are carved, modelled, and cast, welded or assembled otherwise to give the object a perfect subject by shaping intricately. The sculptors also give life to the objects by again finely painting on the objects using paintings and colours.

Commonly found sculptures online, India are brass sculptures, bronze sculptures and wood sculptures.

As we all think, the sculpture is not a term that is fixed to describe a category of objects, rather it is a form of art that grows, evolves and continuously extend its activities to give a better life to the object made. Nobody can judge the future extensions of this fine art and this is how the difference between painting and sculpture is basically defined though many give their own views and thoughts to it.
