What are modern and contemporary paintings?

Modern art is mostly confused with that of contemporary art or paintings. Have you ever wondered about the difference between both? Or even wondered if there is a difference between the two?

Alright! They both are completely different and the terms are not interchangeable. There is a difference. It is based on rough date ranges established by art historians, critics, institutions, who recognized a distinct shift that took place, marking the end of Modernism and the beginning of the Contemporary art age.

Modern Art:

Modern art was created sometime between the 1860s & also in the late 1960s. Art made thereafter like conceptual, minimalist, postmodern, feminist art are considered contemporary.

Beyond the time surrounds, there are conceptual and aesthetic differences between the two arts.

Modern Art was named so because it did not rely on the teachings of the art academies. Many art historians, notably art critics like Clement Greenberg, consider Édouard Manet to have been the first modern artist not only because he was depicting scenes of modern life but also drew attention to the fact that his work of art was simply painted on a flat canvas and that it was made by using a paintbrush. Merely, a paintbrush that sometimes left its mark on the surface of the composition. It inspired his peers and the next several generations of artists, whether in abstract works or representational, experimented with how to draw more attention.

Modern art encompasses numerous movements: Impressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism and many more.

Contemporary Art:

Contemporary art usually means the art of the moment, but defining it beyond and it's open-ended the date range is challenging. It is mainly due to that of the real notion of defining art became a personal quest in the hands of each artist, eventually, that resulted in ever-expanding possibilities. A crucial distinction between modern and contemporary art was a shift in focus away from aesthetic beauty to the underlying concept of the work.

At the same time as Contemporary Art is deepening in its historicity, it is flattening and expanding as to diversity, geography, and materials, and omissions, as to, meet the increased international demand to see and collect contemporary art.
